This one he had to release, as it is a "native" fish, illegal to take, the keepers are the hatchery fish and they can be identified by the removal of the pectoral fin.Done by the hatchery before they release them.

Just reminded me. I have a cold smoked fillet left in the freezer from this season.

My favorite single malt, crackers with cream cheese and salmon while watching the series decider.

ABs by 20+ would make for a perfect first nite home in a fair while 😆

Yeah berg, your right,...he doesn't just drag them in,he plays the fish, knowing he may have to release it.Once on terra firma they do the proper thing by nursing it,water through the gills, until it can power off on its own accord.Makes me proud to see him do that, educating them,as young fellas, like them all, produces results,....you can see where I'm going with that. But the look on the face of the boy, shows it's about the fishing, taken or not,is still a joy to see.

I dont mean to come across as a dick but better education would see the fish un handled and still in water.... just gives the fish more chance of survival after swimming away.

Yeah Gibo, you are right for sure, and to be honest we try and do that as often as we can.The issue is that if you let very tired salmon go without resting them, they drown, seen it several times. But your point is valid, not being a dick at all.Glad you pointed it out.I showed my boy the comment and he agreed....

Even when rested in NZ rivers they reckon they loose a lot condition and strength. Depending on how far down river they are caught it is touch and go if they survive long enough to reach spawning grounds.

I don't have an issue around the way he's supporting the fish, well supported and close to the water good job there. The survival rate on that fish will not be in jeopardy at all. The issue is about how long the fish was played, and the level of fatigued it's at when landed. In this case an acceptable time for a good recovery rate and yes it should be supported and rested before returning it.
