    Advice for trout fishing Taupo

Can someone please help me with understanding the rules around fishing on Lake Taupo. Our 10yo likes fishing and we have fishing kayaks so want to combine the two. I was told by someone we must fly fish on rivers and near river mouths but on the lake you don’t need to fly fish. Is this true?
Are there particular areas you can’t go out on the lake or seasonal rules?

On another note, can you fish at Rangipo dam? Is it seasonal?

Never seen a fish at rangipo fam. I think pillats stops them. Taupo regs are fly fishing only in sstreans ans within 300m of most stream mouths. Lutside thosr boundaries you can use spininhg rods or fly rods with flies, spinners or jigs. I dont thhnk double or treble hooks are allowed. Sports shop should be able to explain up to date regs. Kayak or dingy very slow trolling a fly on daybreak is usually productive. PM me if youwant more.

Fly fishing only on rivers and around river mouths, lake is open all year round but most of the rivers have closed times in winter. Regulations regarding hook sizes and no treble hooks and only 1 rod fishing per license holder from a boat. Jigging and harling very productive from kayaks.DOC website has most of the regulations on it.

Go online to buy a licence and look at the rules there.
Or go see Matt at Taupo Rod and Tackle, 4 Tamamutu St

Spin fish the river below aratiatia, that way you don't need Taupo license and there's plenty of fish
