    Amazing antics

Fished a local lake today for salmon and trout. Cook had day off so we thought we would give the boat a run.

There was a patch of the lake of say 3 square km that was an average of 4 ft deep.
As we approached the area we noticed a lot of splashing around and I assumed they were just active ducks or other birds spooked by the boat.
As it got shallow I stood up looking to avoid logs and stuff. A very large trout jumped nearly my height out of the lake off my bow. Then another a few meters further away.
I cut the motor and drifted hoping to entice one with a thread line and we would have seen maybe 30 more trout put on this aerial display clearing the water at a great height.

All different sizes. This lasted for around 20 minutes and was not confined to a small area of the lake.
There was no hatch of any description so I have no idea what they were doing. Never seen trout get 3-4 feet clear of the water before either

    Never seen anything like it.
We never touched a fish but it was worth the trip just to witness what we did.

Admire your discipline. A lesser man would have been trying to catch them. Four foot deep aye? A thunder flash would have worked wonders for you

Ive never witnessed it but what you descibe sounds a bit like a damselfly frenzy. Its the right time of year for mayfly hatches, but those are very busy and easy to see the duns

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

I have heard that the old Canterbury had been known to go fishing using MK46 torpedoes and a rib to pick up dinner hahahaha

Yeah it had to be something like that I am sure. Feeding or playing around.

There was not a breath of wind and we didn't see anything flying around close to the water. So not sure what it was.
