Never used fly on my lure fishing rod for trout, but it was successful for smaller fish and other sort of trout under 30cm, bass and yellow tails in salt water. So, what is the common type of fly you are using particularly in SI, and is dry fly better than wet ones? Because I am going to make some online orders since fly price in NZ is much more expensive than where I can buy it now. Thanks
Have a plastic bubble half full of water,then about 8oo-900mm long tippet to fly.Works ok.
When trout fishing high country lakes in Canterbury that allow spin rods, i often tie a Hamills Killer half a metre off the single hook on a tassie lure. At times the trout smash the Hamills Killer early in the season then again they also hit the tassie with the fly sometimes wrapped around the fish. Both browns and rainbows. 6 lber my best fish to date. Also just using tassle on the single lure hook can improve your catch. I reckon trebles should be banned for trout fishing - cheap and nasty way to catch a fish - better hook up in the corner of the mouth with a single hook. But a pain to remove the treble and replace with a single when buying new.

Hunteast.....if you tie a small swivel a meter in FRONT of your tassie,put your hammils on the main line with the hook inwards,it slows down snags and looks like the tassie is chasing the fly......Ive also seen it done with leaving tag end long on the swivel,30cms or so works great.
in areas that ARENT fly only... bubble n fly or fly and split shot is common enough... a little faom in body of a fly will make it lift off bottom so with weight 1mtr away it will be up off bottom.
Bubble with a hare n copper nymph in slow water ..fishing to spooky mid summer fish …deadly …
Fishing a cicada even better. Pretty tough on the cicada but match the hatch.
Windy afternoons when fly fishing is damn near impossible, find a corner out of the wind just below the rapid drop a bubble and nymph..worth a try

never had that and I use 5-6lb line.... maybe try the fly the other way..eg running on main line...it is a right beitch to land them in net if you not super careful and aware of other hook....
leaving your tassie running on main line makes a huge difference too...trout cant throw hook using weight of lure.
Around Twizel years ago we use to shoot a few black rabbits in winter.Take a strip skin fur one inch each side of the spine.Gave you a 2 inch wide strip of long black fur.That winter strip you could make buitfull black rabbit lures for night fishing the Tekapo river mouth at night.This was yrs ago befor they took all the willows trees out of the Tekapo river,especially around the river mouth.Id use a Winrod Heritage 8-9 rod with a 8 lb tippet.Use to get some big hook ups on a black night,sometimes land a 8 to 10 lb fish,4 to6s more common.

I have had a lot of luck on the galloups butt monkey fly on my spin rod it has enough weight to cast without splitshot.

Another good lure for night or day fishing is a size4 black marabou lure.The marabou feathers are so life like drifting thru the slow river mouth current into the lakes.
I havnt tried it with spinning gear but my go to fly for wetlining rivers is the Rabbit. I use either orange or yellow body during the day, green going into dusk and then either red or black after dark.
Thye Hawkes Bay F N G newsletter has a pictorial article on this aspect of fishing.
I've been messing around with flies or very light jigs on spin gear with some success. There are more refined ways of doing it than a bubble float. Tungsten flies are heavy enough to cast with light gear and other flies work well under a slim float. I find it an enjoyable way of fishing. There's heaps of useful gear on AliExpress and our American friends are way ahead of us on this aspect of the sport (see YouTube). If a river (or lake) is open to spinning, I can't see a problem from a F&G standpoint.
