Anyone know what this fish is?

Brother caught it surfcasting at Cooks Beach. It's about 5ft long.

Looks like a snake eel. We used to get them off Waihi beach where they lived in vertical hole with head only sticking out. Characteristics include sharp head with nasty teeth and their habit of twisting round and round your line when hooked. Beastly mongrel things.

nah...mouth all wrong and they sort of stay in proportion......I remember helping fillet a ling that long 35ish years ago..two of us held fillet while 3rd guy used knife to slice it off..... the toothfish from first few voyages were of similar size..didnt keep catching big ones for long, size dropped dramatically within two years....same story repeated over n over again.
