    Big ups MAF.

The young folk got home from a trip to the coast last night full of stories and a bit of glory!!

They've being doing a shit load of free diving this spring and have being putting in some hard yards and a fair bit of their coin.

So anyway as some may not know paua have no blood clotting ability so a cut from a dive knife or any sharp object (Screwdriver ,blade etc) is a death sentence, so if you cut an undersize one getting it off the rock measuring it and returning the paua to its rock it's buggered...

So back to the story... the young blokes are sittng on the beach sorting their gear and hello hello here come the Maf team... hay guys how did ya go mind if we have a look etc ...then the MAf bloke goes "here you go lads try these (out comes a hand full of bright orange hard rubber scrapper looking things) its got measurment's on it etc and works a treat!!

hard rubber blunt edges = no cuts = no dead loss

So bloody well done to Maf for getting this idea out to the public.

(yeah i know it's tax payers $$ etc but bugger it I think it's money wll spent!!)

Good to see a government department think and do good stuff.
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

    LOL

IIRC in the 70s the total allowable catch was like 2700 tonnes out of the Tasman Bay & Golden Bay now it is like 200........

I flew out of Nelson to go to a Joinery competition 1985-86, we flew out North from the airport about lunch time on a beautiful day over Tahuna beach.

I looked down to see a small Trawler towing a net with one of the doors just outside the breakers...... WTF

I love those little plastic spatula type tools. easy measure, don't rust/corode and not too bad if you drop them....
good to see they are still dishing them out would hate to think what the dead waste of paua is and the free tool brings a positive aspect to being checked (I welcome the checks as I like to see active policing of the fishery)

IIRC one in Nelson, the boats holds were full, with fish on the deck as well, so they shot the net again, on the way back to port, as you do

They got a massive bag of snapper & couldn't get it all on board so dragged it home, most/all of which ended up at the tip...... good times.....long time ago now....

Yep thats the one Greg, A certain skipper of the era used to skite that he "had wiped out snapper in Tasman bay" and he was very nearly right.
