What would be a option is getting hold of the rental outfits that do light trucks, campers etc and see if anyone is having to move one down country for whatever reason and see if they will cover your costs down country. That way its only costing you a plane ticket up...

transfercar.co.nz is the one, the website works better on desktop, you can just hover over the pick up location and it shoots little lines to the destinations. I have used them many times. Works well.
