Does anybody know why...

Canned salmon is specifically excluded as an NZ game fish? Pity really, it puts up a good fight :thumbsup:

A large part of the "Canned Salmon " & " Pacific Salmon" is Kahawai .Exported to Aus; processing including food die added ,canned an sent back to NZ . They use to get it for a few cents per kilo ,don't know what they pay for it now.

You see Chris that is interesting. My mother in law from my first go round bottled Kahawai and it tasted just like canned salmon. Now I know why.

Is there not some kind of law against canning Kahawai and labelling it Salmon? Bloody well should be.

aussies over here in WA call kahawai salmon so maybe it is a type of salmon or somethin

Still, that doesn't explain why it needs to be explicitly excluded on the game species list! It's not like you can illegally fish for canned salmon, regardless of what's actually in the can.

They tried to get the name changed to Sea Trout a few years ago Rushy.
Think the Aussie refer to it as Pacific Salmon ,only looks pink after the food die goes in.
Believe its illegal to put that die in it here too. (Maybe wrong)

Not that iv seen a heap of trout or anything but i have seen a heap of kawawhai and they dont look anything like trout.
Australiains will call anything anything just as we will in order to sell it Hoki = blue grenadire = a species of hake
Ling is called all sorts of shit.
Squid is called all sorts of shit also but most popularly Calamarie its all about marketing squid sounds yucky and unappealing but calamarie wow that sounds exotic lets buy that LOL.I may laugh but it works.

I was once woken up in the middle of the night(at sea) to set up filleting machines for barracuda by the FM I went back to sleep thinking he was having me on(we did that sort of shit trying to catch each other out shagging the new chick) and the skipper woke me on the intercom.
So i went and set them up to fillet them watched production for an hour to make sure all good then went and talked to the skip.
Who is going to eat this worm filled shit? I asked. The aussie fish and chip market love it was the reply.

For all you inshore fisherman who are going to say they are great eating(there are a few:wtfsmilie:) these were not inshore fish.At the time of year they were caught in the depth they were caught(way plus 400m) there flesh was 50%or more parasites and im not kidding or exaggerating.
Be careful eating fush and chups in aussie :D

But it probably tastes better than 99% of the fish available in Aussie veitnamcam.
Personally I don't have a problem with feeding an Austrailian that.
I do like them smoked but check them for worm first & if even suspect they're garden fert.

Hake doesn't have the same parasite does it ?

Hmmmmm.......Now I'm a little suspicious of the '2 fish burgers for $5' at the local Fish and Chip shop. It's just seems too cheap to be 'actual' fish

I would a thought you would pick a cuda fillet even in batter;) Personally I dont eat fish smothered in batter, I actually like fish;)

Jeeze thanks and I was going to get fish and chips for lunch next Monday in Brisbane, I think they market barracuda as snoek or something like that.

bang on AR when i first went for a spin in aus my mate was going hope we get a samon and i was thinking ?? were in the bay mate then i spun one up and i yelled its a Kahawai and he looked at me funny ha ha
