Mid winter the Stephens Passage for sure for the tide then you could chase grouper if flat enough or blue cod (if you can be bothered) then Chase snaps while waiting for the tide for the kings.
I used to go up there with some other guys in their boat we would go from Okiwi. Its a bit of a haul and you always watching the weather but in the winter is usually OK. Never fished the eastern side apart from the top.
Catch plenty of kingi's around the top, there's also a few grouper holes around there too, okiwi doesn't hold much, but once saw an old lady pull in a 55cm snapper of the jetty there, so you could get lucky there. (go there every Christmas) French pass is good fishing for but the currents and rips through there have been unforgiving in the past when it gets rough or at change of tide so do be cautious! But yes anywhere around the top and east is good fishing, don't forget it's a massive island!

Have caught some good kings and snapper up in the passage
grouper is very hit and miss if you don't know spots (which i don't) haha
Good cod, big kahawai, also good hunting in greville harbour :)
I have been meaning to do a full weekend trip up there for the last few years haha
For the snaps up there in winter its all about the gigs 'slow gigs', lucanis, bottom ships etc. Last year @ the rewaka hunting and fishing comp (August) there was even a tuna weighed in that was caught on a jig at Durville. It defiantly wasn't an albacore, possibly a slender tuna or a juvenile blue fin :)
Get into it fellas
Sorry that was meant to be Jigs!! ... bloody Jigs not gigs :)
Spear fish the rangitotoes or port hardy butters moki Paua cod mussels scallops ( anyone heard if we are having a season ). Bucks ( crayfish) should be shallow! Hell it would just be an adventure getting amongst it all:thumbsup:
@stingray I read an article on the nelson mail stuff page a couple of days go suggesting that the scallop season would be closed again this year due to stocks still low, so most likely no season - Bugger!!
Bugger indeed!!
Full stop for all species I reckon! If you want to eat fish catch it yourself, no fish for sale!!
I watched a youtube clip the other day of a Chinese tuna boat operating in the pacific that can catch in one net set the entire tuna catch of a pacific island for a year!!
No wonder we haven't seen any albacore in Tasman bay this past summer! Such a shame, so much fun to catch on a rod!!
@Munsey... getting back to your original post about 'hatching a plan' If I was you id rent a batch in French pass.
Ramp good for launching in most conditions except big northerly/northeast.
Its a bit longer to tow the boat but more options once there.
Shit weather = bob around in pass for cod etc
Easterly = south through the pass round to paddock rocks etc
Westerly = up east coast to the top, rangitotoes etc
Mint conditions = world ya oyster :)
Can't launch = tow boat back south, fish in sounds ie Elaine bay for example
Just my two cents worth
And if the dates suit and there some spare room I'd be keen
Another spearo to double the catch
I spent ten years of my life mostly at sea commercial fishing to quantify my following comment.
I believe it is every human beings right to be able to catch a feed for themselves and family and with population growth in this country and the world there will reach a tipping point....for some species in some areas this has already happened and for some it is already too late.
That tipping point where there is not enough for rec and commercial to be sustainable, where it becomes impossible/impractical to legally feed yourself/family then IMO their can be no commercial fishing it is that simple.
So yes I support those family's, they will be able to catch fish to feed themselves.
Well , I'm ready !! :)
