    East coast & Wairarapa coast

    Guys,

    Looking for some recommendations about fishing and back-country roads pls.

    Plan is to take the long way home after a shooting comp in Te Puke, and do as much salt-water fishing as possible.

    Specifically interested in piers/wharfs, so that the Mrs can have a fish as well.

    Tolega Bay is a definite stop.

    Do any of the following have a good pier for fishing ? Nuhaka, Waipatiki, Waimarama, Herbertville ?

    Also, any advice on the road condition from Waimarama to Herbertville via Elsthorpe, Blackhead, Porangahau. Is this suitable for non-4x4 ?

    Thanks in advance

    From memory Herbertville has an incongrously Tudor-style pub at the turn-off and a flat windy beach that was overrun with dairy cows last I visited (long time back) but it does have a campground

    Pongaroa Pub is good

    @ebf - unless you're 4 x 4 mounted, off-road excursions should be forgotten on the East Coast.
    Porangahau - great beach, pub not too bad, new owners a few months ago.
    I'd suggest you talk to our mutual friend in Norfolk Road - he rides a dual purpose motorcycle on tracks/gravel roads with an 84 year old.
    The 84 year old has a wealth of information about both coasts of the Lower NI.

    Ta Wally, will give him a ring.

    Macca, I doubt the dannyvegas dwarf has salt-water fish in his river

    Did trip around East Cape couple of years back, so not too stressed about roads up there.

    Not sure about roads in the Wirarapa wop-wops at all.

    Had a good look at most of those places in sat view on Google maps, not much luck with piers or wharfs south of Tolega Bay.

    Going north into Coromandel might me a better option... Kauri Point in Tauranga, Whangamata, Tairua etc.

    @ebf

    You could fish off the old warf at waikokopu just out of mahia

    Or fish off the beach further south at Blacks beach

    There is no warf at waipatiki or waimarama

    No sure you'll catch much off the beach there either.

    However you could try the river mouth at Waikare, turn of highway 2 at putarino beside the Waikare pub.

    You may even get a kahawhai or two fishing at the ngaruroro river mouth just south of Napier opposite the fertiliser works at awatoto.

    Good luck

    Cheers
    Pete

    I've been known to put too much salt and watties on our fish,so they are salty

    Pongoroa and Akitio are easily accessed with non 4wd,Porongahau is another that might be worth looking at.

    Its a nice drive (if coming from sth) to turn off at Pongaroa and follow the the Coast Rd to Akitio beach, and then cross the Akitio River bridge and take the River Rd back to Route 52 (or visa versa coming from the north).
