Just interested to see if anyone else has been catching snapper with very white flesh.
What I have found is that up to 50% Snapper taken off the sand out of Whananaki (Northland) have white flesh, which is a sign of malnutrition according to MPI.
This is the first year I have seen this in big numbers and in the past 30 years of fishing in the area have only seen this in a single fish before.
Can now identify these fish when caught as they a a bit skinny and are slimy to touch.
There are a lot of bait fish about and there are more snapper than I have seen for a number of years.
From conversations with other anglers, it appears that reef fish, while still effected don't have the same frequency of the issue.
Just interested to see if the issue is wide spread.
    Cheers

that sounds like a post spawning trout...referred to as "slabs" because they are slabsided and not good eating at all. given a bit of time to feed up the yput the condition back on again.

The Turangi fishery is going well at the moment, maybe the cold snap and or moon phase? Had 4 days, landing a fish per half hour of fishing on average. Only one slab, and about 50% freshies.

Post spawn fish.....happens to all whitefish species.
They have put everything they have into producing eggs and milt while not feeding much or at all and in a month or two they will be fine.

Okay you’ve hooked me! What the fuck is a slab (other than a Whittakers peanut slab which I am quite familiar with) and a freshie?
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

slab as I said four posts back,is a post spawning fish that is skinny and SLABsided.....thus called a slab.
back in the 80s a slab was also a 24 pack of cans on a cardboard tray, one of the road safety adds of the day.... when youve polished off a slab and you shouldve called a cab, dont worry mate shell be right........you also risked ending up on morticians slab if did the same.

freshie is trout or salmon that has recently arrived in river to spawn, thus its FRESHly arrived usually in top condition as has fattened up for the spawning effort.

Got back to my home and wife & cats for couple of week. Fishing tomorrow at the same place, same time for same fishes. Hopefully I can catch the 50cm long silver fish and a big cat fish.
