    Flounder for Breakfast

Walk after dinner tonight hoping the wind would drop, it didn't so headed into the rushes and baby mangroves and spotted these two unlucky flounder in the murky ankle deep water.

First time spearing flounder since I was a kid, probably 40 years ago... Good fun and just took the two which is more than enough for breakfast for two of us.

Anyone else spear for flounder, any tips? The tide was incoming and I found the head torch better for spotting them in the murk than the under water H&F wand

Look like a couple of beauties. that bring back memories.
The only thing I know about spearing them is an incoming tide.

That’s a monster the big one. Great work getting two beauties on the spear.

I have found a few local spots where the flounder like the crabs. They always seem to be in the same spots and other areas are empty.

I also have a similar set up but have just reverted to a good head torch these days as it frees up your hands. I also target the low to incoming tide but some areas are even ok at a higher tide.

I think floundering is very close to hunting.

Beautiful and close to my heart.
We used to spear Kinohaku (Kawhia ways) and 50 was an average night. The eels used to freak me coming straight in for the Tilly lantern.

Crossing the channels back towards the bank later on once the tide had swung back in was the worst, well over my head territory.

Thanks for the replies, We ended up having them for dinner, wrapped in foil and done on the babyQ with plenty of salt, lemon and butter. Pretty nice dinner.

The big (I assume it was a) yellow belly was a big bugger, too big for the frying pan. I think they taste better fried in enormous amounts of butter.

    Cheers

I remember as a kid out with siblings spearing flounder in aotea harbour,we had blue rectangle drum of about 100ltrs (photo somewhere of me asleep in it LOL) it had one side cut out so would float along nicely with string tied to belt,a tractor battery inside it powered the spotlight, one of the big blue jobbies you only see in garage inspection pits these days.... the light under water surface would stop glare thing happening. one of best set ups Ive seen was a sit on kayak with strip lighting in the grooves underneath.
