    I remember as a kid out with siblings spearing flounder in aotea harbour,we had blue rectangle drum of about 100ltrs (photo somewhere of me asleep in it LOL) it had one side cut out so would float along nicely with string tied to belt,a tractor battery inside it powered the spotlight,one of the big blue jobbies you only see in garage inspection pits these days.... the light under water surface would stop glare thing happening. one of best set ups Ive seen was a sit on kayak with strip lighting in the grooves underneath.
