I have caught a few in the Temuka river over the years when I was flyfishing for trout. Above the Waitohi/Temuka bridge. Saw them as they were swimming up, quick change to a tiny nymph and cast to them. Unlike trout, they werent shy to the cast and as they slowly made there way upstream, its wasnt difficult to recast in front of them if they refused.
Have also been told that they can be caught on a spinning rod with a small single hook and a worm for bait. Use a running rig with a lightweight ball weight. The estuaries are good, but once you get the hang of rolling a tiny weight down moving water, further up can be productive.

I've targeted them with fly and softbait, sight fishing the edges at incoming tide and always spooked them. The only I've caught was with a zed lure while salmon fishing... Dragged zeddy up over the lip of a channel, boom, no salmon but a chunky flounder for breakfast. There's a guy on YouTube who targets them on spinner and softbait somewhere in the NI and seems to be quite successful.

Just a footnote, Albert Lyu seems to catch most of his flounder in urban Whangarei among the dog walkers and skateboarders etc (i.e. well in to the river system). Something I can't quite bring myself to do, but rivers rather than coast or even estuaries may be a more target rich environment.
i have contacted albert and he is sendind me some lure s to get me started cheers update when i have a go
I just watched a fair few of his vids, and not only has he got it dialled in, but his lure choice seems to be, pretty much all the different, smaller kinds that Temu and Ali Express want me to buy, and plastics, and so on.
So I've ordered a bunch and I've set up a rod, so the next time I'm passing an estuary, flounder for dinner! I hope :)
