i used to do OK at Harts Creek (flows into Ellesmere) with floating line and a Mrs Simpson lure
Never fished harts but theres massive fish in all those creeks it seems . My mate got a 13 +lb trout a coulple of years back on a thread line, on a stream that comes off the lake . His old man is a retired fly fishing guide and fished all the great rivers ,caught thousands of fish ,mates fish was biggest by far .

I only ever used to fish the last mile or 2 to where it runs into the lake. Anything over 10lb was exciting to play in a wee creek.
I grew up in Leeston until we moved to Ashburton a long long time ago but still would drive back to fish the creek.
When I was llittle we had a family batch at the Upper Selwyn Huts, I wish we (the family) still owned it
