Great Barrier Island fishing (off rocks or similar)

    Hey everyone,

I’m heading to the island next week for a trip with the gf and her UK based dad, who is dead keen on a little fishing. Charter would be lovely but I was thinking for charter money we can bring our own gear over and fish from land slash rocks! But before I ruin his holiday I thought I’d check if anyone has done something similar over there with any success?

Honestly if he is coming from overseas and wants to experience NZ fishing go on a charter for kings, then piss around shore fishing.
How do you rate your shore fishing skills in an area you have never fished before?
Yes you could catch some epic fish from shore or you could look like a compleat twat....charter first shore fish second would be my advice.

That place is legendary for its fishing, both from boat or rocks.
    BUT..local knowledge is king.
Go to the pub and get to know a few faces(ie; get a few rounds in

I’ve already taken him on a couple, Auckland and Coromandel so he’s not gonna go home disappointed. My fishing anywhere skills are pretty average, better than his though. Will do a little more digging.

    Thanks all!

I got the helicopter fishing charter to GB as a birthday present one year. Awesome trip but no fish.

Gone up a bit in price since the 1990's!

That helicopter trip would be brilliant, but yep it’s worth a bit now!

In 2007, I tramped around GBI. I sat on the wharf at Port Fitzroy and straylined salted squid. I caught snapper after snapper. Mostly legal, but nothing too big. Catching fish certainly wasn't an issue. Hope it's still like that, but I agree, a charter would be the way to see the best of it.

Quick update, managed some comfortably legal snaps off both rocks and wharf, more stingrays than I’d like and a couple of sharks. Brilliant week. Will definitely be back, this time a little less green and will do a charter as well as rocks. Thanks all!
