    How do you catch Snapper?

Up the top of the south at the moment and planning on throwing a line in the water Nelson way from the yak. What sort of tackle should I use? What sort of bait?

I have the Garmin GPS, the phone GPS and the VHF has it built in too.

I'm up the Wairau for a weeks R&R with the family, first holiday in 2 years thanks to being mucked around by EQC/EQR/Fletchers and a bung head/neck. Going to visit @Pengy and thought I might sneak the kayak into the water afterwards. Have snorkelling gear with me too.

Pillchards and a yak fisherman I know swears the best snapper bait of all is cooked prawns tho I havent tried them myself.

If you can run two rods then good to cover your bases with one on a strayline setup and the other on a flasher rig. can lend you a little longline setup too if you can fit it on/in the yak.

I have a couple of cheap light spin sets and a cheap and nasty boat set with me, stuff I won't worry about losing. Might need to pick up some bigger hooks. The yak has plenty of space as I bought up bugger all gear.

Flasher rigs (fluffys) are good however also attract Kawhai. Use a 6/0 hook to minimise the smaller fish hookups. A bit of squid first then pillie on the hook. Could use circle hooks and let them hook themselves, also help to prevent the hook been swallowed by smaller ones making it easier to release and survive.

When I'm kayak fishing I usually have a Lukanus over the side whilst I fish with a soft bait or Phillies stray line ,that way I cover my bases. also I precut my bait and keep it in a sealed container, that way I don't attract the Taxman
