Was at the Mouth of the Waianakarua river today catching exactly zero fish when I watched a rather big Seal haul him or herself up onto the spit on the South side.

It lay for bit then slid down into the river and disappeared under water

Amazing, I have never seen this before.

What? You have not seen a seal scare away all the fish???? happens a lot in the sounds. If we se a seal on the rocks we fish somewhere else. The only thing that we catch near seals is dogfish. Not sure if the seals dont eat them or if there are so many that they just dont care....

No, I've seen heaps of seals, I've just never seen one deliberately enter a river.

They often come up the rivers here in Nelson, and I know that they go quite a way upstream in kaikoura

Well it also means I'm never going to put my dog in there again, fucken things are massive.

I've seen a couple come up the Orari river mouth into the lagoon. Same deal, caught exactly zero fish that day.

They come up the mouth of the Waitaki sometimes when I'm out in the surf whitebaiting, they glide in on the waves and come right at you snorting. Puts the shits right up me.

Seen a seal on the coast swim upstream then float past on his back eating a trout like it was a corn husk . According to locals he,d been doing it for weeks

Whats even stranger is the snapper been caught surfcasting at waimak mouth..

Seal burps are horrendous

Water temps seem to be a bit higher than usual. Heard of a few knigies being caught at the mussel farm 16km out and around the peninsula.

The bloody things go well up into tidal sections of rivers in the catlins, eating trout. One lived in the tahapoka river estuary for months a few years back.
Had one steal a salmon off my hook in Otago harbour once, mate thought it was hilarious, I'd reached for a rifle if I'd had one.

Have seen them in both the Rakaia and Rangitata lagoons while salmon fishing. Best to grab a seat on the bike and have a cuppa while they piss off back to sea, no action when they are about.
