Why bother thinking of new techniques? There's so many cod in the deep South, it's no challenge to catch them. A boring old long shank hook and any bait works, hell even a bit of white rag at a pinch.

One thing you don't want is small gear as the buggers swallow stuff deep and it's impossible to get it out without killing them.

Small hard metal jig (micro jig) should do the trick. As above, they are very agressive and eat just about anything but if you use a jig you only bait up once and they are easy to unhook.

    What do they look like?
I have been using kaburas and the likes and they work really well but ya near cry if ya lose 1.
Always lip hooked and never deep in the mouth so far. I think they are far better than bait and cleaner.

I’ve caught quite a few blue cod on lures in Northland, usually inchiku. Check out Kaveman tackle for cheaper, good quality gear, and good service.

Soft baits do work well but the cod wreck them pretty quickly that's why I prefer hard jigs.

+1 cod tear them up. I like 6/0 flasher rigs baited with squid as I think trumpeter and teraki are more likely to grab them than plain old bait alone and cod like them too, although nothing beats a longshank cod hook for ease of unhooking . Flasher rigs are cheap as chips, even cheaper than marine deals on aliexpress and the quality seems fine.
