I ve used them for trawling, But im sure they would be OK casting out with a small weight in front to get it down a bit.
Me and the Bro fished of the back of Pupunga Point in the Manukau last Sunday, Kawahi where keen to have a crack at any thing. The swell was rolling in pretty hard from the SW and smashing up the boulder beach there, and my line was getting caught in the rocks. I had no sinker just two hooks in a large bait to sink it down. After loosing 3 sets of gear I found a dirty old coke bottle, put a cup of water in it and tied it about 1200mm up from the bait. Cast that out to keep my baits out of the rocks, worked mint. When the bottle would land and slap on the water the doppy Kawahi would hoon up and check it out then duck down smash the bait.
Took home 1/2 dozen fish for the smoker.
