All caught using mullet which I catch in the Waikato river. I normally salt it then freeze it to prolong shelf life. The salting is more to toughen the baits, not for its increased keeping abilities.

What do you catch them on and how far up river are they? In the intertidal zone or right up in the pure fresh water?

Caught using a 60m mullet set net.

As the river is pretty big towards the mouth I tend to have a look around and find the schools. The net is set up to float so just run it out keeping hold of a line on one end and let it drift with the tide (incoming).

These are caught in the intertidal zone. They are right up the river into the Huntly lakes where there are heaps of them (only good for bait up there though).

Ahh, I used to get the occasional one if I set the flounder net during hours of darkness.
Set nets are banned here now thanks to Nash.
