Kontiki catch

A mate was hinting about not having had fish for a while, As there was a small window with the swell down we hit the beach early Saturday morning. Weather was terrible but the happy trade off was the beach was deserted.

One advantage of keeping feet on dry land. While swell was down the white caps and chop off-shore would not have been fun. I enjoy boat fishing but the Kontiki is hard to beat for just collecting a feed.

Yes but tend to give a lot of it away to friends , family and old people I know. I don't freeze fish and after a couple of feeds then what?. Better to give it away to be enjoyed fresh.

Certainly is better fresh alright

one of the most novel ways to freeze fish Ive seen is inside tetrapak carton with top removed...put in fillets and fill with water then freeze.....no show of freezer burn when fillet is encased in ice.
we freeze lots of trout in vacumn pak bags and it keeps very well.

That trout must be great bait in the end....

hell YES.....edmonds recipy beer batter really makes it shine.......
I believe many folks dislike of trout is down to 3 things.
just like kahawai it needs to be gutted n bled properly quickly
the bones are tiny and if you dont fillet properly they are a pain (again like smiked kahawai best eaten with fingers)
SOME fish from SOME places have muddy flavour...Ive struck it once..searun from opihi that had been in lower reaches for some time,have heard its common in lake rotorua..a muddy lake,so it figures
and fourth...cause like most fish you have to know how to cook the plurry thing...steamed in tin foil with lemon...yeah nah..slimey and soggy...quick fried in butter straight out of lake.absolutely fanfarkintastic.

I hear ya... My first second an tenth, were from lake Brunner. I don't like trout

Good haul there well done.

I like trout but the only ones I have eaten all come from clean water.....pretty much like salmon.

Awesome!

All caught using mullet which I catch in the Waikato river. I normally salt it then freeze it to prolong shelf life. The salting is more to toughen the baits, not for its increased keeping abilities.

Smoked, mullet is pretty hard to beat.
