My most crazy was a flounder up up at the Seddon bridge…
My favourite sea run trout down the bottom of the Waimea & Motueka river , amazing fish !
I do remember in my teens when I lived in Palmy north, (early 70's) playing down in the Manawatu river and several times spooking flounder in the shallows under the Willow trees. Never thought much of it.
I have seen flounder up above the old Fitzherbert bridge and caught a couple.
Long way from the tide.
We’ve got seals running up the Tahakopa River for miles. Absolutely hammered the trout population.
There are mullet in the Wairoa and Mungakahia rivers in Northland past where there is any visible sign of tidal impact or salt water. Often see 20 or 30 in a school. Used to get catfish in the eel nets in the Hikurangi swamp, guess they would still be there.
Mullets every where these days it’s the in thing
At Whatipu in the Waitakere Ranges, there are huge (long) mullet in freshwater lakes. The lakes were created by sand dune movement, blocking off streams.
I used to do quite a bit of surfcasting at Whatipu but never thought to look in any lakes :)
My 223 has its mullet badge.
Took a few shots, have to wait till they are right up on the surface
I once witnessed an impressive sight of mother nature on the river I w/bait on in Sth Westland.A black serpent of a Grey Mullet wall slowly snaking up the river on the surface on an incoming tide.I don't think a school is the right term.Approx 300 yards long densely packed across the full width of the 100 yard wide river. In no particular hurry. They appeared to be surface feeding on pollen spores? or maybe plankton?Went inland 2 miles to the top of the tide ,then slowly mooched back down to the mouth. They are usually present at the mouth when the bait is running but only in numbers or 1-200.This wall had an inestamal number but the biomass must have been in the several hundred tonnes.Only seen the phenomenon once.Looked like pearing into a salmon farm Tank.Totally buggered the baiting for that day
@Dazzh and I saw a seal near Okororie when drift shooting the Waihou years ago.
Probably 170 km from the sea.
