My son came out the closet today...

At 8 years old, he's come clean and told me that he doesn't like fishing and only went on fishing trips to keep me happy. Obviously, this will have a significant impact on our family. He's still my son and I still love him, but there are going to be difficult times ahead. What do I tell his grandparents? Will he become ostracised from the community? I think he's too young to make such a decision, do you think he will grow out of this? Any advice?

This thread is not a (complete) piss take. All he wants to do is play video games.

mate....fishing can be as involved or aloof as you want to make it..... if the video game is the issue..turn off the wifi on friday night till Monday morning....
my kids would worm fish with rod outside of tent....they went bound to sit there bored, could read or what ever and still be within the prescribed 15mtrs at all times.
portable devices are there but hey boy Im off fishing you can come for some fresh air or stay at home,up to you,(but the wifi stays off)..fishing suddenly looks attractive. special snacks or visit to maccas on way home MAY help...
my boy is in Whitianga if you want to adopt him...he would catch fish in a bucket and be happy, you will NEVER be short of bait fish ,that much I can guarantee.

put him on a raw vegan diet. after a few days it will be "i need to go fishing"
put a remote control on the incoming internet line (easy to do) and 1/2 way through a game disconnect him !

its hard being evil but its a job

Seems it's not a choice for them then, since he would choose to be into fishing just to fit in. Might be a pro fishing retreat you can send him to to be re-educated

When I was 8, I want to play video game too but I only got a rod. Now I am 40+, all I want is fishing and I got all the gears I like, even I got 65 inch flat TV, home stereos, xbox but I only play few minutes for every few months.

My suggestion is try to find why he does enjoy fishing, there must be a reason and the reason is not fishing itself since at least he went out with you. Maybe is the cold, wet, smell of bait, boring time when there was no actions, or something he maybe afraid of. My secrete is....I seldom swim in lakes and I am afraid of get into water alone but I am good swimmer.

    MB,
My son did the same in his early teens. However he still wanted to go camping and hunting.

10 years later he’s interested in fishing. His reasoning is it fits with camping and beers by the water.

$188 for a family licence, our lads are too old to fit in the category now but its the cheapest option for me and the mrs,....the boys use to come fishing whether they liked it or not when they were young.

Won't have the video game problem. They are banned from my house (I say my house, but really you know) so that's one thing that the boy won't really get into...
