    Nelson Lakes

    Hi all
The Whanau and I are heading up St Arnaud for a few days starting this weekend. Its a family orientated holiday so the rifle will stay at home, but I thought I might try spinning for trout. I'm clueless with fishing so any tips about lures, techniques or locations (shore based) would be appreciated.
I always wake early and will generaly have 3 hours or so before the others stagger out of bed so figured I'd try a few casts on a couple of the mornings.
    Cheers

Hi @footsore. I'm no expert but I do a bit of fishing around the area. My best bet for a fish would be the Argyle pond (about 25 minutes drive east of St Arnaud). There are trout in Rotoiti but I have always found the fishing hard. The scenery makes up for it though.

No problem. Hope the weather is good and the fish are hungry.

We use to fish the canal above Argyle, twice my wife gave up fishing, handed me the rod I took 1 step downstream, cast and caught a fish.

Argyle and the branch and leitham rivers are your best bet and the buller worth a go as well

Trout numbers/ fishing in NLNP has been in steady decline for at least 20 years.....doc dont want em and fish and game aint allowed to help em.

Lake Argyle is full of fish. Fish and game release heaps of brown and rainbow trout in there and its possible to catch salmon .
Plenty of 1 kg fish but there certainly are fish around 6kg in there plus some ok salmon at times. Last drift Fish and game counted 420 med to large rainbows and browns.

Cheers fellas...I think I'll get myself a three day license and give it a go. I'm thankful that you've taken the trouble to point me in the right direction.

No reason you shouldn't get 6 good fish with that at argyle. Pm if you want some tips.

Thanks for all the help guys...but I struck out again.
Followed your guidence and went to Argyle. Had two sessions ...1st in the early afternoon and one at dawn. Don't fret though, bigger men than you lot have failed to make a fisherman out of me ...and despite the score board the kids and I had a good time.
    Cheers again.

Unlucky. Good to hear you enjoyed it there but you didn't have to leave them for me to catch. Still searching for that $500 voucher.
