I know about this. The pic is actually of a fish from the Bay of Islands that was brought down in a tank alive. The pic is of it being liberated at Kaikoura.

Its part of a 20 year research program to find out if SI fishing can ever be as good as the NI.

Seems a bit like a really good stag going out under a meat hunting chopper to me. But that's the way things are I suppose.
Taken from Ministry Primary Industries ( Game fish tagging ) : Marlin species are also a bycatch of the commercial surface longline fishery that mainly targets bigeyetuna (Thunnus obesus), swordfish and southern bluefin tuna. Within the New Zealand ExclusiveEconomic Zone (EEZ), commercial fishers are obliged by regulation to release all billfish, exceptswordfish, whether the fish is alive or dead upon capture. This regulation includes a provision that livebillfish should be tagged if possible, and tagged marlin recaptured by commercial fishers are allowed to belanded and brought to port for scientific study
