Taken from Ministry Primary Industries ( Game fish tagging ) : Marlin species are also a bycatch of the commercial surface longline fishery that mainly targets bigeyetuna (Thunnus obesus), swordfish and southern bluefin tuna. Within the New Zealand ExclusiveEconomic Zone (EEZ), commercial fishers are obliged by regulation to release all billfish, exceptswordfish, whether the fish is alive or dead upon capture. This regulation includes a provision that livebillfish should be tagged if possible, and tagged marlin recaptured by commercial fishers are allowed to belanded and brought to port for scientific study
