Otago and Southland Tips

Going to spend a month mooching around in the motorhome this January in that area, will bring a spinning rod to flick for some trout here and there, limited access with a motorhome but I do have a mountain bike.
Not after spot ''X' but is there a go to spinner or softbait for down there that time of year ? not done much river fishing so any tips appreciated .

When I lived in Southland I used a red and black Toby for most of my fishing. Caught a lot of fish on it.
