You got to hope these thieves get what they deserve.
People like this have no respect for the fishery or society in general.
Save our Tahr. They belong in the southern alps.

    Thats a lot of Paua...

It puzzled me why some people are crazy about them (the paua, not the divers).
Well overrated shellfish and the divers... they are selfish.

Not NZ, but gives a bloody good picture of the 'industry'.

    The money involved is staggering.

A work colleague was out of Kaikoura 2-3 weeks ago with a commercial fisherman, they spotted a fella in full gang patches pulling pots, evidently it's rife around Kaikoura, the skipper of the boat said it was his pot the lowlife was pulling up.

So breaking at least two laws at same time...police would have attended that one very quickly....funny we never heard about it on the news?

Evidently it's rife up there, pots have names or references to who they belong to don't they?. The mob probably know who they belong to, they may have spotters watching over them from shore. I know where I dive and the commercial boys likely have a shottie on board, I'd expect the mob guy to have one also....just in case, happens in houses up north, cars as well Micky D, I would personally assume it'd be the same on a boat. The skipper is likely playing it safe by not challenging the theiving poacher....I would to tbh, no point in starting ww3 with the gang and that's why you haven't heard it on the news.

Personally...fark putting a shot over the bow, I'd rather put a few through the hull!. If the same thieves had done the same with the Pooly fisherman off Motunau years ago that's exactly what would have happened.

My point is...they were said to be wearing patches.... So a double whammy for coppers who are targeting them. I do see your point re not stirring pot but that's getting very very close to bending over parting your arse cheeks and smiling ....

I get your point, whether it's relevant or not it happened just before the new rule about gang regalia kicked in. Point 1, the guy was in mob gang jacket, Point 2....are the police even watching the going ons up there on any relevant scale?, I'd like to think so despite the fact they have no where enough staff or financing. Anything fisheries probably comes down to MAF. It happened, I spent 5yrs living and working in Akaroa...remote bays were hammered by Asians (not wanting to sound racial or particular towards individual ethnicities) but they concentrated on various bays removing EVERY shellfish that moved, if it didn't move...they would give it a nudge plus they had a spotter higher up watching incoming vehicles and sent a warning to the 'gatherers' if need be. They weren't gang members Micky but same principle applied.

Trout are gill netted. Human greed knows few boundaries. As a whole we are too soft as a society.... My solutions to these sorts of issues are frowned upon...
