Question Recommend me a Saltwater spinning setup

    Morning all.
I'm doing the big NZ "OE" at the moment, I've just come through the east cape and really want to get a rod/reel setup that will allow me to spin fish off the rocks.
I currently have the following freshwater rod/reel set up: https://www.huntingandfishing.co.nz/...e-s96mh-pa-set
Which bloody works well for me, but I'm completely lost when it comes to salt water, basically I want the following:

    1. Rod & Reel combo that I can just buy online/in store
    2. Preferably with line already attached
    3. NEEDS to be telescopic or break down very small as space in my vehicle is limited
    4. Prefer it comes with a bag of sorts.
    5. Suitable weight to handle off the rocks, say up to 10kg fish?

    appreciate any and all pointers.

    Cheers

What style of fishing, and what sort of fish are you wanting to target?

Anything that doesn't use bait, ie lure/spinning and fish to target? Shit, I've basically only fished fresh water my whole life. So what would I catch off the rocks? Snapper, Kawhi, mayyybe a small kingi?

You could realistically target snapper, kahawai, trevally with softbaits and small lures casting off the rocks, up north. Down south, likely just kahawai except for a few spots in the sounds. I've caught all sorts off the beach/rocks - gurnard, etc - but that's the likely 3.

A kingi off the rocks is a possibility but you'd really want a gruntier setup than you'd use for the above to target them with a higher likelihood of success.

    What's your budget like?

Hmm that's good to know, I just assumed it would be the same species down south too.

2-300$ as a budget. It's not going to be my full time job, just have it in the back of my car, so if I see a nice spot I can pull over and try for a feed.

I'd go something like this - I find the Penn reels good value - get it spooled up with PE2 braid

2-piece rod rather than tele but you'd find somewhere to slot it in the vehicle.

Longer rod is better off the rocks but most longer rods are set up for bait fishing, or heavier for stickbaiting kingis etc.

Give us a yell if you're coming through Hoki on the OE and cone out on the boat for a fish, if the weather is right

dont bother with telescoping rods of the rocks they are tinny -very thin walled and just cant hack it - get a 10-15 kg casting rod possibly 3 piece and a shimano- penn or daiwa reel -- of the rocks berley is a must if you really want success

I'll be sure to do that mate, thank you for the offer. I'm on the boat heading south this sunday.

Yeah good point about being thin walled, I hadn't thought about that, does mean what Gimp was saying is a better bet.
A bit of berly would work too, I just want to avoid bait as much as I can as I will be slumming it in an Outback for my travels at this stage. Might pick up a motorhome if my house sells.
    Thanks Barry.
