Thread: Reels - for Snapper - Cod - not big barsteds

Just buggered my Shimano Torium - something went wrong inside and I opened and parts in all directions and no way to get back together :-(

What is suited for light fishing
Boat
Depth not over 40m (most not over 10m)
Don't look after gear as well as should - but not rough on it
Braid

Circa $200
Best place to buy ?

Shimano Hyperloop is a good option for a cheapie. Lasts way longer than it should, but doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Can't help with suggesting a retailer since I stopped going to H&F in March. Marine deals (online) has some good buying at times.

We have had a good run from our Penn 320GT reels. Pretty basic overhead reel but proven over time.

I have a 4000 and a 1200 and they have been punished for years and still hanging in there, advantage of baitrunner mode for straylineing a pilly out the back for big snappers and enough grunt for a kingy if one happens to grab your gear.

I use it for running rig with full Pillie
Usually get pissed of with it after 2nd or 3rd 7 Giller or Stingray :-(


I have just bought on Wish an underwater Cam with 5" screen viewer :-)
Don't think will run it down same rig as using to catch as I imagine be a tangle mess when hook up
But for a laugh - reckon could be handy in our shallows to keep away from the annoying bait pinching species.
I get pissed off real quick when I loose 2 bags of Pillies to those thieving beggars and have to head home with nothing

Talking about bait
I often catch Mackerel - (ones with that hard ridge on side - forward of tail)
I thought they meant to be good bait - but I seem to never have any luck
When getting short on Pillies - I put Mackerel on top ledger hook - never gets touched ???

YES - good idea and use as a running Rig on Baitrunner
So what bait do you guys use mostly - Pliies are great - but not to great when stale and they just fall to bits like tissue paper
And not cheap either

What about kahawai as bait - we catching more Gurnard now in inner Pelorus than Snapper - so are the Gurnard as fussy as Snapper Re bait choice ??
Which to be honest I preff as an eater anyway
No worry about limitation on catch etc either

Eat the Mackerel, they are much better than most people realise.

Salted markeral for carrots goes good, can be refrozen doesn't go mushy etc, they are suckers for a sofbait just need current and burley...well over our way that seems to be how it works..but when they are on the chew squid etc damn near anything goes

If you're happy to use a spinning reel and you're rough on gear, have a look at the Penn Slammer III series. IPX rated and well built. I have one on the ski for kingfish. Only downside is that it's on the heavy side.

Kahawai goes ok as bait but not as good as pillys and salted mackrel.
