    Salmon Fishing in the Canals

Righto have we got any Salmon fishos from around Tekapo on here?

At this stage I am heading down to Tekapo for work around the end of March. I have never fished in the Canals but I'm keen to give it a go.

I will need a licence so where is the nearest place to get one?
Do I just need a spinning rod?
Type of lures that work better than others?

    Cheers Ross

    Cocktail shrimps cuz...

Tekapo, Twizel and even Omarama all have little tackle shops to get a licence from.

Check out the complete angler web site for some good general tips and videos...

If you already have a national licence you're sorted. Only need a separate one for Taupo. You can buy one online or over the counter at your local.
The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

I haven't got a licence and will only grab a week long one when I get down there. Wasn't sure what was down there in the way of sports shops but looks straight forward. There's heaps on you tube so sifting my way through them.

Has anyone been catching much in the Canals lately?
I will be down in Twizel on Sunday for the week but only able to fish after work.

I fished the canals a few years back, when I was working down that way, I mainly fished the mount cook canal.

I used light gear and had good sucess dropping a Gulp soft bait 2 inch silver minnow in close to the edges of the salmon farm.....not sure if it's 100% legit but I didn't get any grief from the other fishos , I nailed a few good size salmon around the 6 to 8lb mark. I spent most of the day spinning and trying different lures then slept in the back of my ute with a rig set using those small shrimps or "whoo whoo" grubs worked the best at night , The rig was a small sinker on the bottom with about 800mm of trace up to another trace tied off the main at 90deg that was about 500 long and had a small bit of cork half way along it to help the bait float above the weed. I was told about this rig set up by a local chap, and it worked well , I just found you had to play around with the trace lengths a bit to get the bait above the weeds etc.

Anyway tight lines and all the best - let us know how you get on...
