salmon fishing rod and reel advice

heading down the south island in the new year in our camper and would like to fish for salmon and trout in the main rivers on the east coast and then head to the canals. My wife and I only have light spinning gear so we will have to up grade. Is it possible to buy one rod and reel each that we could use in both the rivers and canals for trout and salmon. we were thinking of spending about $250-00 each.Could anyone give me some advice on what to buy. cheers jeff

From my limited experience I would day the rod would be ideal. I don't know the reel though

Sorry i just looked up the rod I have played with and it was the catana nano, it's a nice rod with lots of feel

thanks puku.yes you were right that first combo I asked about was the sahara 4000 reel and catana 7 ft rod $189. I think maybe the better combo might be the sahara 4000 reel and the catana nano xg combo for for $220. cheers jeff
