Pretty thin in our waters these days. Used to get onto them and it would be two at a time for a few hours. Saturday we got 3 over about 4 hours.
We can limit out on them in about 1/2 hr in couple spots we fish.
2-3kg only being kept

Welly/the straight still seems to fish well for them and the southern west coast, I was on a charter a couple of weeks ago around top of durvil/stephens and despite 6-8 lines in the water with 2 baits each pretty much all the time not one Tarakihi was landed!!!!
While the link I posted is not very specific I believe the petition is for areas TAR1 and TAR2
Plenty of Tarakihi around here. :P Attachment 91645 @Gibo stop looking for bills. :D
They aint the biggest, but the sweetest tasting, get a limit in a couple of hours.
Well the waters we call the middle ground from Tga heading out to Motiti sure aren’t what they used to be
I don't agree with that VC, but really ask yourself 95% commercial 5% recreational, I get out once a month if I'm lucky. Thump MPI . :omg:
Hey @Gibo I've given you the spot. :wtfsmilie:
Used to dive the big ground off the eastern end and there were layers of them there. However over the last 25 years fewer and fewer year by year. Now you don't swim down through them anymore by the drop off and you only see a scattering.
I can't be bothered fishing in close anymore because of the small size and reduced numbers
Runnn ya cursor onto the pic @Gibo
Strangely on the inshore (<7 km off shore) coast north of Dunedin when fishing for blue cod I seem to be catching increasing numbers of tarakihi for unknown reasons, last time out I got 11 I just fish a ledger rig with squid, often I use cheap 6/0 marine deals flasher rigs also baited with a bit of squid, so not really targeting them with shellfish baits, generally they aren't much over the limit size-wise so I'd rather catch a decent cod or trumpeter
