Hey Nick, I first visited ( from Australia )the mighty South Isl in 1986 to hunt Thar & Chamois. I fell in love with the country & the people. It took another 35 years to finally make the move... I now live here. I started out in the Marlborough Sounds. I would walk to the jetty in the afternoon & using a light trout spinning rod catch 1-6 Kahawai in mostly as many casts, having a super fight on each fish...it was amazing. it is the most beautiful country on earth...still free & easy compared to everywhere else...Oz is a great place but getting crowded. Enjoy this outstanding country.

That's right and even if you are fishing for pest fish such as koi or carp you need a freshwater licence. Go figure

I'm not sure, it's another grey area. People don't buy licences to go eel fishing. Worth an email to your local F&G office.

Can't wait to get there now, great description, thanks. If you think Oz is crowded you should see England, we're sinking!!

South Island land based game fishing, I’d look him up…looks like one hell of an experience!

Kahawai make beautiful sashimi, more highly regarded than snapper on our boat! Trevally is best, but it's easy to pick up a Kahawai, often from where we've put the anchor down for the night.

If you approach Kahawai in the same way you approach seabass back in pomgolia then you will have a great time.
I would imagine that if your into LRF like a lot are in the UK then you will have a great time doing that kind of fishing too

Hi makka, thanks for that, it will be my Bassing set up I'll be using. From photos Kahawai does look a bit like a European Bass crossed with a Mackerel.

They call them salmon in Aussie, I can see why in some light.

By the way, I lost two good fish from the shore early this morning. Either small kingfish or big trevally, not sure. Just destroyed me and that was using 16lb braid and 15lb fluorocarbon leader!

Hey Nick, I went back to my spot and landed half a dozen small kahawai on a soft bait last night. Kept three fish around 30cm. Filleted, salted and pan fried in butter hot and fast. No need to remove the blood line in the little ones. Fed my family. Delicious!

Have a look at Fishlocker on youtube. He is from your neck of the woods and a lot of videos on your area.

Personally I hate the taste of Kahawai, I think almost any sea fish tastes better including shark.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.
