Pretty certain cant sell rec caught fish,
My understanding there is no quota/limit on maomao and some people are exploiting that loop hole and filling freezers in one go.
Quota only applys to the coms

Quota as in limit = your daily allowable catch
maomao has no limit
Those mongrels are sure as shit NOT taking those numbers of fish to feed the kids

It's illegal to sell any rec caught fish or shellfish (except whitebait).
And if the species isn't under the commercial quota system, you can't just claim to be a commercial fisher as there are a lot of legal requirements for the fisher and the boat

MPI can do 'random' checks of any food premises freezers/fridges (if you have fish on your food safety plan) at any time. You must have receipts for all fish on the premises (at least that's how it works for fish species under the quota system i.e. blue cod) surely MPI has an 0800 number....
Fish also has to be landed and processed by a licensed factory, everyone gets their share of red tape.
Used to get tourists wanting us to put the fish they caught in our fridge till they got the ferry home... Not likely when it was $250,000 or 3 yrs jail iirc
My understanding of the rules is unless you are a licensed commercial fisherman you can not sell your recreational catch.
The only exception I know of is whitebait and that needs to stop as well.
I remember those pricks at the Coromandel boat ramp loaded up with Maomao, off to Asian restaurants in Auckland.
Shame someone didn't do something too seriously discourage them from returning and slaughtering the local fish population , once they get little opposition and good returns the greed factor kicks in, last thing they care about is the Marine environment, it's all about the money.
