MPI can do 'random' checks of any food premises freezers/fridges (if you have fish on your food safety plan) at any time. You must have receipts for all fish on the premises (at least that's how it works for fish species under the quota system i.e. blue cod) surely MPI has an 0800 number....
Fish also has to be landed and processed by a licensed factory, everyone gets their share of red tape.
Used to get tourists wanting us to put the fish they caught in our fridge till they got the ferry home... Not likely when it was $250,000 or 3 yrs jail iirc
