Decided to get out of the house for a few hours today while there was a break in the weather and headed west caught absolutely nothing in the fish department, but still we came home with a small feed of these tasty little buggers.

Yep they were certainly sweet and tasty these cockles were the biggest I had seen for a very long time and one local who saw me told me that not many people know that they are in that spot and yet they get walked past a lot by people not from the area and only the locals know that they are there. Next time we go fishing there we will get some more of them if the fishing is shit again.
Damn that takes me back to my childhood. I used to pick them out of the Whangamata harbour. Break some open and put them on your hook while you are out there. They don't stay on well but the snapper go nuts for them
The last time I had any was april fools day

yup way too tasty to use as fish bait, where I was yesterday there are also mussels starting to grow in the area I got the cockles just a shame I could not find any legal sized mussels yesterday to make it a real good feed.
bet a good gutsfulof those wee darlings would make a man fart in church!yummy/
pretty sure there is, or am I wrong
Edit: just googled and no size limit for mussels just a catch limit oh well ethics kicked in again and thought I would let them grow a bit bigger.
No offence H308, but if you didnt know that there was in fact no size limit for Mussels, at what size would you have taken them ? Assuming you had some form of measure with you anyway. Just curious really.
Would have taken some if they had been around 80-100mm before I was aware of no size limit for mussels as they were around 50-60mm I just don't like the idea of taking any form of sea or freshwater species if too small and it does grate on my nerves when others do it.
Some mussels will never get to 100mm, dont ask me species names but there are many types of mussels
