Thread: Spearguns and inflatables

Pick up my Takacat next week and just got a Johnson 15 for it yesterday so I'm furiously making plans to get it out on the water before it starts cooling down again. Have a trip to stewart island in the planning stages (would take boat over on the ferry) and a few spots to day trip to. I don't personally know anyone using an inflatable as a dive taxi but know that heaps of guys do and I'm wondering how you get on waving pointy objects like spear guns about when diving from an inflatable. Any clever ideas for a cap etc that can go on the spear whilst it's in the boat and before climbing back aboard?

I've never been worried about it personally. Never been an issue with my inflatable. A piece of speargun rubber or plastic tubing is the way they come from the shop.

I've got a ton of old rubbers, happy to post you one you can cut up to make some tip protectors if you don't have anything lying around.

Use an off cut of your rubber loading band on the end of a spear.
Getting in to the boat either dangle your gun pointing down(holding on to float line) while getting in or hand it to your mate that is in the boat.
A good tool kit is important. Get a couple of strips of thermacraft flashing tape to patch holes. We had to do this once after a 7 giller decided to chew on the side of the pontoon. Was a slow 32km trip back to the boat ramp

Sharks get a bad rep generally. This would not be something that happens too often. However I have found that the 7 Gill sharks are best not to be antagonised. I. E best not to poke them with your gun or be aggressive towards them or they respond in kind.

Ok handy to know ,yeah I likes sharks wouldn't want to harm them ,but wouldn't like them biting the blow up .
