Taupo Lake & Kuratau River Fly Fishing

    Hi All,

I'm off to Kuratau for the long weekend at the end of the month for 3 days (one will be doing the Tongariro Crossing if the whether good) the other two will be chilling at a house next to the lake, smashing brews and extinguishing the BBQ if it goes on fire.

I intend to go out on a kayak on the lake once and hit the Kurarau River for one of the mornings.
My current gear is a #6 weight rod, floating line and the traditional nymphs and dryflies (pheasant tails, Royal walfs, few streamers and woolly buggers).

Is anyone familiar with the area and is willing to share some tips (flies & gear I should use)?

    Cheers in advance.
    Pete

i fish the northern river mouths, floating line, about 2.5m leader, black or very dark streamer type flies when its dark, I only fish at night or early morning, morning you want to be in the water and fishing by 5am and probably head home by 6.Try fishing at night, you want no moon and this time of year start about 10pm you must finish at 12pm. Stand to the side of the rip and cast across it about 45deg, very slow retrieve.Glow flies also work very well, you light them up with a torch. If you want some pm me and I will send you some, I won't be around that w/end otherwise I would offer to go with you.

If you have a softbait/jigging rod and trace, head north from the river mouth about 10 mins in the yak and drop your line between the ledge covered in bird shit and the cave further up. Great piece of water.
