Te Kouma Harbour
Yipee,
10 days starting this Sunday staying in Coromandel Town and fishing out of Te Kouma.
Anyone fished out of Te Kouma harbour?
Any tips / warnings about the area?
Have the "X marks the spots" book so will generally use that as a rough guide and rely on the sounder for exact anchor spots. Wife hates drift fishing so mostly anchoring up and berleying.

Step one find a mussel farm
Step 2, start fishing
Try the islands north of Coromandel harbour
If your boat is big enough move out wide and look for work ups....yes, you’ll be drifting so take a muffler for the wife or ear plugs

Thanks guys.
Yes thought I might do a $65 day charter mussel farm fishing trip just to see how its done early on in the week. Probably the day Wifey's sister comes over from her place in Whitianga. they can go coffee shopping and people watching I'll go fishing.
Need to stock up on soft-baits as when I tried a few last weekend the two-year ones were getting a little past it.

thanks for the heads-up. Got to hit Burnsco in the morning for supplies and two-stroke oil.

If you are new to that area a couple of things to note are that there isn't much parking at the Te Kouma ramp, and don't anchor in the mussel farms (you'll get snagged and probably abused by the farmer - get a mussel farm hook or tie off to a bouy).

Heading there tomorrow, Fished last weekend plenty of 50cm snapper around, pretty much any rocky structure or reef is holding them, anchor up current, berley up big, baits and hopefully screaming reels. Or fish the Manaia farms they’re producing at the moment too
Get liveys and run one under a balloon as there’s a few kings around
Best of luck

Thanks Cigar. Yes noted lack of parking when we visited last weekend for a recce.
I have a grapnel that I use for mussel farms. My son recently cost mw an anchor & chain after putting down the anchor too close to a mussel farm.

Been a few years but we used to go into the mussel farms. Plenty of fish and they didn't mind as the snapper just eat their mussels. Get some mussels for bait and drift them down, no sinker. Best place is in the debris stream from a working barge but they don't like you too close these days. H &S worries.

Just had our first Te Kouma trip last weekend. It was awesome. Not many kings about which surprised me, plenty of live bait, and snaps, so all was not lost. Cow and Calf was promising for kings but not our day. Definitely be back!
