Thread: Trout Fishing: FREE Flys for Juniors

Gidday team, really like hearing about those of you working hard to get others into the sport. Looking to pass on a selection of trout flies to anyone getting their kids/mates into fishing. I’ve been really fortunate over the years with help from others and have the capacity to tie my own flys so I figure this is some way I can pass on the generosity of others.

From my experience a bit of time with someone willing to share some skill/experience can be the defining moment for a beginner and really sets the scene. Thanks to all of you that are passing on your skills. Cheers to the HAWKESBAY Guide that bumped into me fishing one of his honey holes ‘unsuccessfully’ and showed me the way (Patangata 2005 ish). Aside from loosing the big one.. the most gutting part of fishing starting out is loosing that $3 fly that’s you’ve saved the lawn money for.. and let’s be fair if your buy flys for the kids you’d probably rather save the money for jars at the pub.. I have 200-300 available so will be in 10-20 bundles depending on the interested.

I remember my god father taking me fly fishing quite a few times as a beginner. My back cast wasnt always that flash and on the odd occasion a fish took my fly i wasnt able to set the hook as I had always snapped the point of the hook off banging the stones behind me. It must of cost him a small fortune to take me fly fishing.

Yea good stuff, I’ve certainly lost my fair share of flys to the dodgy back cast!!

when you run short,let me know and I will whip up some dodgy creations too....dont loose many these days and need excuse to get tying kit out again.basic nymph patterns are just too easy to tie up. good on you for making this offer....

Cheers @Mightyduck that’s the ticket. I’ve got a good we stash here for now but we’ll see how the response goes and keep in mind! Appreciate the offer. I’m sure there’s tones of people in the same boat, sometimes even old half buggered flys are a great start when you whipping a few in the trees... These flys are really top knotch (not all my creations) but will be a mixed selection that is sure to make a great start to someone’s collection!

This year I got licenses for the great grandies and I found information was the hardest to come by.Even those fishing the local lake would not share there 'secrets'. A few mentors are a valuable commodity and I applaud you willingness to put yourself out.We have not progressed past a float and worm but it has been great fun.

Yea bugs me when people are like that. Where fortunate in NZ to have what we’ve got. The more people that enjoy it the more likely they are to protect it. You don’t see many fisherman dumping their rubbish in rivers or on the side of the road do you..keep at it. Rest assured that your kiddies will grow up with a real appreciation for what they have/thier experiences with Pops. A good progression from the float and worm is a dry fly/emerger behind the bubble. Heading into summer you’ll see the buggers jumping/rising and they won’t necessarily take that worm. Bubble + nice 4/6lb trace 1.5m to a wee foam beatle on dark, whammy. Good on you @VXN222 my son would love some for the coming season. He loves fly fishing and I haven't the faintest clue about it so he's had to learn himself and caught his first fish last year. He could always could use some more flys for sure. Thank you

Good stuff @Pete_D I’ll get back to you and arrange a selection for your young fella. �� best thing I had growing up in a non fishing family was Parents who helped by getting in contact with family friends and other folks in town into the sport. They certainly got dragged to a few rivers and untangled a few knots but mainly helped with gaining contacts and teeing up adventures. There’s some cracking spots up your way. “HB born” lad here.. cheers

My kids have had the best results there with a worm about 1.5m under a float. Keep the hook as small as manageable and the trace light.
