    Waitarere Surf Casting Competion

We went along for a fish at the Waitarere Beach Surfcasting Kawhai Competion on 5th Feb 2012.
We all headed down on the Saturday Arvo to set up camp for a beach sleep over, along with Postie freinds. After a feed and a few bevys we baited up the hooks and sent our Kontiki on a snapper hunt. It went out about 1200 meters and we hauled it back in after about an hour out there 10pm ish. It had 4 good size snaps onboard along with heaps of little sharks. Baited up again, changed batteries and out it goes again 11.30pm, out about 1500meters this time and we pulled it in at 1am. This time the line was loaded with 9 good size snaps and 1 carpet shark, then bed time for a 5am start sufcasting.

Sunday started rather hungover and steady as she goes lol, i had bait in the water by 10 past 5 so pretty good i thought. Had no bites, changing bait every 15 or so mins, so it was off for fresh snapper on the bbq for brecky, it was bloody good for the headache thats for sure. Back into it i tied on half a pilly and cast it out, kickin back in a chair by the water and the guy next door yells FISH, i look up at my rod and it had a fish on it alrite, up as fast as ive ever moved i started relling the sucker in, it jumped outa the water a few times and put up a good fight before it was on the beach. It was a Kawhai weighing in at 2.66kg, we fished until closing time with no more luck then packed up and headed to prize giving.
I won the 1st prize of $1000 cash for the Heaviest Kawhai
What an awesome way to end an awesome weekend of fishing

Looks like you had perfect conditions in that last photo. Can get pretty wild out those ways when that wind picks up.

Good haul mate. Bloody kawhai have been scarce over at the mouth the past few weeks.
