Wear Your Life jackets fellas

After watching the ABs vs France , the father in law and I went out of the mount for a fish - we dropped a long line and some spot and then went in towards Rabbit for a stray line . We settled in for half an hour with a few other boats around we had a small 1m swell coming in & a light breeze - A boat to our left pulled anchor and started moving - At a glance it looked small and low in the water - A couple of minutes later I hear a Yelp and look over my shoulder to see the same boat flipped up with the Bowe upside down and pointing to the sky - the two occupants flapping about in the water. We got onto the radio and called Coast guard gave them a sit rep and went to offer assistance - Luckily there where a few boats around so there was plenty of help and the situation was under control quickly. The coast guard took about 20min to arrive and sorted it all out

Gives you the shits tho - what seems like a great day on the water with no real risk / winds / massive swells etc - can soon turn pear shape. They had life jackets on and swam to the closest boat - Also makes you think how the situation could have been a whole lot different if you changed a few of these variable's.

A great lesion on wearing your life Jackets Lads :cool:

+1 ALWAYS wear a life jacket....your NOT a wuss if you do....its really about common sense not machoism.....

I'm more than capable at swimming 2km but always wear a life jacket. One of those variables is your ability to do anything if incapacitated.

Im Not sure - I think they may have got swamped - the boat looked real low in the water with bugga all free board - more a Jet /speed boat than a fishing boat - would have only taken both of them to be on one side of the boat throwing the balance out & being already low in the H20 could have easily been hit with a good swell and as they say .............the rest is now history .....:sick:

Im not 100% convinced about these self inflatable PFDs, they rely on the person wearing the device to have the ability to inflate it by pulling the cord or blowning them up, really not much help if you took a smack to the head & ended up in the drink.......but I guess that wearing one of these is better than nothing eh ....... ;)

There are manual inflating and auto inflating ones available from memory from last time I looked.

One word of advice – if you have removed the gas bottle - don’t yank the operating handle unless you want to spend some money – the tiny bit of green plastic that holds the handle in place on my ones is only available within a full rearm kit - $39
Two out of my three had very loose gas bottles - not sure if they would have inflated or not
