the bigger lures usually deter the smaller fish from getting caught
anything can hoover small stuff
iv got them on every sort of slider/butterfly/sabiki rig you can think of
they are like flies when they are undersized you cant keep them off your gear and each one needs to be played carefully which eats up peak bite times or that half an hour of slack before the tide starts running
the size of the jig tho is as stated above to get it to the bottom the heavier it is and the Knifier it is the faster it will cut the water and get to the bottom before its waaaaaaaaay out the back of the boat
the problem usually is getting past the swarm of rats to the larger ones at the bottom.
kingiis love soft baits if that gives you any idea of how small they hoover and with small jigs you often have to dig it out of their throat = dead undersized kingii. do that a few times and you realize why its an aweful idea
best thing I find is a decent livie either slow trolled off the boat or balloon off shore that way you can set the size of the kingii you want by the size of the live bait
