what reel/rod combo for deep water?

with he purchase of my new boat, i am looking at moving into deeper waters and having a go at some groper/puka, what is a good reel/rod that wont break the bank? i dont know the first thing about deep water/game/jig reels so any info is helpful. i only have a crappy okuma rod and reel which i use for cod and terakhi etc.

Fin-Nor biscayne BLD 20 and fin-nor 24kg stand up game rod $450 plus shipping from full on fishing if you want to spend more then the fin nor marquesa combo from fishing and outdoors will be another good option.

Yeah man its the go. Look around on trademe for a decent jigging set up for your price range. Il try find some and post the links for ya.
At the end of the day you will have about 300m of 37kg braid so hitting puka is on. The rod wont be as stiff as you would have on a dedicated puka set so you will be working a bit harder. If thats not an issue then its a win win.

Never used one. I would look for a lever drag though. The star drags havnt been great for me on jigging sets.

I brought 2 Accurate BX500s and stuck them on JigStar 250s.

Brought them for Jigging Kingis but in reality they get used for everything and I mean everything. Mine stays in the cupboard unless fishing deep or chasing tuna, kingis or bottom bouncing but the missus uses "hers" for everything incl blue cod fishing

If the fishing in HB was not super shit I would buy this exact combo.
Braid sure gives a big advantage with lots of capacity but the drag and gears in smaller cheaper reels will not live up to the higher loading.
Fin Nor were the reels you dreamed of, now a lot of outsourcing to Asia has made the name not so mythical. Mind you I have a small fixed spool I picked up in the US and it has been fine.
For the bucks I'd look at Shimano reels, not their rods. There have been a few Accurates for sale on the other side worth a look.
