Thread: What size spinning gear for trout.

As I am winding up here and planning to be in NZ next year. I need to choose between few rods I have and decide what to carry so please advise what spinning rod will be suitable for trout around Manawatu and Wellington area. Length, Lure Weight, line weight wise..

In general as light as possible. Light gear will catch you more fish. I use a 1-3kg rod, 6lb braid mainline, 6lb leader. That said, I don't know that area, so if there's lots of snags, heavy river flows and big fish, then it might be worth stepping it up a little bit.

I use to use a 7g black and gold Toby all the time.

6 foot'ish rod ( 2 or 4 piece)
2500 spin reel
6pd line

Black and gold toby 7 or 10grms

This will catch trout almost anywhere in NZ.

6/7 or 8 foot rod for lure weight 5-15g

2000 or 2500 size reel to hold up to 100 yrds of 4-6 pound monofilament

4-6 pound line

7 gram black and gold or green and gold Toby or x spinner


Same rod and 8-10 pound line combo works well on Kawahai of all sizes with 12-15g jigheads and soft plastics

Thanks gents, So reel, line and lures (Have few spoons and mepps Agila 0,1 size) are covered. Will have to pick up rod in NZ.

yup agree with rod and line - my go to lure has always been a Mepps Black fury black body with yellow spots - just check on what hook is allowed they come with a treble and you may need to change that to a single

Don't overlook softbaits for trout. I like the single, upward facing hook as it tends to avoid snags. Small paddle tails are dynamite.

At this time of year there are lots of rod and reel package specials around in the hunting and fishing shops aimed at families and kids. Perfect for trout, wharf fishing, and even good on the kahawai.

I use a Shimano backbone 6'6" 3-5kg and a 2500 reel. 6lb line mono max if you are fishing small clear rivers (braid needs a trace or else the clued up trout will see the line)

You can use bigger rods but you loose "feel". Some soft mouthed trout (Mainly Browns) will nibble and nibble at your lure but not actually take it, you need light gear in order to feel the bites and strike to set the hook.

Veltic and toby's work well as a base set of lures. Just mix up the colors. Green works well in the summer months up here on the central plateau, Mepps black fury worked amazing on the middle reaches of Rangitikei. Black and gold is the old fall back color for the change of light. Pink can aslo work well and soft baits for when nothing else is working. (I haven't quite worked out how to use soft baits)
Don't be afraid to use the bubble and nymph method.

Light tackle in small tight rivers and heavy lure for the big stuff. My lures range from 6g to 12g.

Never felt under gunned except when a Kahawai took my lure at lake ferry.

Don't forget to check the local regulations in regards to bait/lures and hook count (triple vs single point) as all of these can change as you travel up a river system.

Hey mate, personally not familiar with the xitus rod but the 2500 Sedona goes good, have caught a heap of hard pulling kahawai on one
