The hut we stayed in for a few nights on a recent trip is a private one. It is stocked with pots, pans, cutlery, sleeping bags, chainsaw, fuel, Lamps, kero, etc. etc. It also has a couple of old milk tins under the bench filled with spare food.
We thought it would be a good opportunity to go through the food and have a bit of a sort out.
At the bottom of one of the tins we came across the dehy meal pictured above, with the expiry date 11/98.
"That one is getting on a bit" we said, "Lets open it up and have a look".
A couple of plastic bags containing the meal, an oxygen absorbing sachet. Looks pretty good, smells good, not musty at all.

"Wonder how that would cook up after 19 years in the milk tin"?
We dumped the contents in a billy and added the appropriate amount of water, cold though, not hot, thinking we would let it soak for the day while we were out.
Get back in around 8pm, meal has done it thing and soaked up all the moisture, so we add a bit more and chuck it over the fire to heat her up. Mixed up some dead spud and some dehy peas too.
A couple of tentative tastes and the lads are all in agreement. "Dig in".
Went down a treat with a bit of plastic cheese melted on top for good measure.
