Its not what you get but what you give that makes a life !!
Done mine a while ago. Hope everyone who use’s the Public ( DOC ) Estate makes a submission. It doesn’t have to be a novel, just a few lines to get your point across. Or use their own submission form if it’s still online. No submission, no right to bitch and moan about any negative outcomes.
Did mine too...
absolute disgrace by the Department of Corruption to want to charge people for access to their own land.
Their first approach should be to cut waste spending.
Tourists are already paying a fee when entering the country, could adjust that without spending a fortune for additional payment infrastructure. easily done.
Sadly the envy brigade is getting all excited by making other people pay more.
so whats going to happen is they'll introduce fees for non residents, and install the payment infrastructure.. once in place theyll moan about lack of funding and everybody gets to pay.
enjoy your fee access to public land everybody.
Done it's a slippery slope alright
Just did my submission - it takes about 10 minutes. Thanks for the reminder!
Just done.
They answer their own question right at the start, around 50% of tourists access a short walk of some kind, and I imagine 90+% tourists visit a beach, short walk, or national park of some kind.
Tourism is our largest export, seems like the obvious solution is the Government just funds DOC properly as they are already collecting the money from tourists through other taxes.
Kiwis having to pay to access DOC facilities should be out of the question, as should Part 9 (basically Councils and Iwi).
If councils start charging to access public facilities (that they already pay for) then that would be an outrage.
at present DOC can only charge where it provides a facility such as a hut - access to our public estate is free of charge and enshrined in the Conservation act Free and public access something DOC seem to forget on occasions - sorry me old mate Beetroot I dont have a problem with paying for a hut provided its maintained and many likely have not seen a DOC staff member in decades - I see in the news announcements on herds of special interest that some i.e Kaimanawa sika and fiordland wapiti are close to some sort of resolution - I await with interest and some trepidation on what that will all mean - but tourists should be paying more and the Govt should recognize that tourism is back as a money earner and fund DOC properly - but as soon as the Govt of the day is strapped for cash its tracks huts that cop the cuts - one of the cost cutting excercises DOC could do is stop spending such huge extravagant amounts on any new hut - I am bloody sure if one wanted a 12 bunker it could be made for well under half the cost of some of the extravagance's DOC put up - does it really need a architect at $30,000 before its even built - iron roof iron sides plywood lined what more do we want - bloody bush Hilton
yes and all kinds of damn expensive long drops the worst stink the ones ya cringe at going to for ones normal ablutions are the ones with big tanks underneath - all the pong hits one on entry - the best out door dunny is a long drop and every few days tip some lime down and no flys no smell
DoC in particular, and in general all Govt departments are shockers at gold plating everything they touch. Our District council is having an 800m walkway installed alongside a 'B' road. For Kinloch walkers to use. This, for a full time population of 800 people, and about 20 walkers daily would use the grass path to undertake their daily circumnavigation of the walkway.
Its had 1.25 million thrown at itWalkway has gone from mown grass to concrete, roadside barriers erected, 4m long bridge section, 75m elevated section, 400 dia piles, earthworks up the waazoo, speedbumps yadda yadda. And then people complain about rates rises. DoC facilities I saw last year down south can be a shocker. Danger Will Robinson signs everywhere, Exit signs over the only exit available, etc etc etc. DoC wouldn't need to raise so much in the way of funds if it didn't spray the funds around gold plating everything they touch.
