Finding Greenstone and panning for Gold on the Coast

    Evening all.
Doing a South Island road trip and we are going to the Coast with the family for a few days next week. Does anyone have any tips they are willing to share on some good spots to find some Greenstone? Just want to find a few stones. Also planning on doing some gold panning. I know there are a few public prospecting areas. Is it worth having a go there or doing the tourist thing. We have no experience, apart from watching Aussie Goldhunters on TV. I heard there was a place in Ross where you can do some panning. Is that as good a place as any? Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You can fossick for greenstone on the beeches , stuff iv found is small but nicely polished , Gold well it shouldn’t really come as a surprise but ya can’t just wander around with a pan & shovel but there are areas you can go

Just keep in mind the water will be really cold especially for kids a wee sluice box would be the go , easy enough to make your own that way you can more or less just shovel gravel onto it , watch some YouTube to get the gist of it .

I'm planning on being on the coast next week weather permitting
And i have a great spot for gold as long as the river isn't up.
I use pans to check the beach out and set up the sluice in the spot i get the most colours

    .
We are going to be in Franz for a couple of nights will have a look there in the waiho. Then up to Hokitika for another 2 nights.
I was thinking of getting a oil changing pan from super cheap. Would that do as a pan?

He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Splash out on a proper pan, leave it in your wagon and you'll be surprised where you find a chance to have a quick pan.
